March 2009

Dear Client,

The economic news coming out of Washington just gets better and better, doesn’t it? AIG continues to lose money like they’re burning it in bonfires, and we now find that the SEC was warned repeatedly about Bernard Madoff as far back as 8 years ago, and did nothing. Apparently they can make sure all the documents are filed and signed, but no one on their payroll was ever hired for common sense—much less for possessing a background in accounting. Unless this changes drastically, we will be in for more wholesale looting and be asked to pick up the tab. Agencies whose sole purpose is to protect the public must do their job. Otherwise, we can save a bunch of money by shutting them down.

Meanwhile, offering goods and services through the Internet continues to be one of the most cost-effective ways to advertise your business and generate sales. The cost per sale of a typical Internet transaction is a small fraction of what a traditional brick-and-mortar store costs. There are a number of things to consider in developing an effective web presence. Give us a call and we’ll be happy to share what we know.

I was saddened recently to hear of the passing of Paul Harvey at 90. For those who don’t know him, he was one of the pioneering news commentators of the last century. He had a unique delivery style that was never emulated—it was just his. And his commentary showed off an intellect and grasp of current events that was unsurpassed. He had more common sense than anyone I’ve ever listened to. His insight will be sorely missed.

I believe we are winning the war on the local gopher population. From the last newsletter, I’ve trapped 4 more gophers in our yard. The only down side is our dog thinks I’m the most selfish person she’s ever seen for not sharing them with her. :-)

We had several days of rain last month, some in multi-day successions. I’ve found that is what I need to germinate spinach. As a result we have several nice rows of spinach coming along. We also have a number of Beefsteak and Celebrity tomato transplants nearing the time to set them in the garden, as well as serrano and jalapeno pepper seedlings doing well.

Best wishes!

Sincerely,

Ben Conner
